Poultry Litter Feeding Ban: Implications of the 2nd Interim Rule for Animal Feeding1

Matt Hersom, Dale Dubberly, Kelly Friend2

This publication concerns a recent (January 26, 2004) interim rule issued by the FDA that will in all likelihood forbid the feeding of poultry litter to ruminants. The publication lists some general facts about poultry litter, summarizes the concerns that led to the FDA interim rule, and provides both the current status of the rule and a "best guess" for the final status of the rule. Finally, the publication lists implications of the potential feeding ban, including cost increases and the potential for increased regulation of poultry litter used as fertilizer for agronomic crops and pasture.
