Introduction

The Equal Credit Opportunity Act makes it illegal for creditors to deny credit to you because of your sex, race, age, religion, marital status, or if you are on public assistance.

The law also states that:

The law protects women. But it does not guarantee that credit will be given. Credit is given based on each person's credit rating.

Credit in Your Name

For all joint accounts opened since June 1, 1988, creditors must report information to credit reporting agencies in both the husband's and wife's names.
