Sap testing for vegetables involves separating the petiole from the leaf blade, (2.1) calibrating the nitrate (NO3-N) and potassium (K) ion specific electrodes (Cardi meter shown here) with standard solutions, (2.2) extracting the sap, (2.3) collecting the sap from the press, and (2.4) placing a droplet of sap on the electrode. A hydraulic press may be needed only when few petioles are available or when petioles contain little sap as may occur with strawberry. In most cases, a garlic press will be an adequate tool to extract the sap. Readings should be compared to published sufficiency ranges.
