This position involves a coordination responsibility for livestock/forage Extension programs in the major beef production region of south Florida. Specific efforts involve a close working relationship with state faculty, county Extension faculty, government agencies, and allied industry representatives. John Arthington's personal Extension program involves the education of producers on cost-effective methods for supplementing grazing beef cows. Special emphasis is placed on the impacts of nutrition and management on stress resistance, immune competence, and reproductive and growth performance.

Research efforts focus on dairy cattle nutrition, dairy cattle reproductive management, postpartum cow health, and performance. Extension efforts focus on integrating nutrition and reproductive strategies to improve the economic well-being of Florida dairy producers. Particular emphases on organizing the Florida Ruminant Nutrition Symposium, the Florida Corn Silage, and Forage Field Day, and on international exchange programs for training post-graduate students.
