At an appreciation party on June 23, 2023, an array of representatives showed up in honor and respect of Debbie for a job well done. It was certainly mixed emotions to see her go yet a shared consensus that she needed a chance to focus more on herself and family. Celebrating with Debbie were approximately 100 people. Attending were staff of the St. Lucie County UF/IFAS Extension Office, representatives of the various 4-H clubs, community sponsors and friends of 4-H, as well as former Extension agent, Sue Munyan. The event took the format of a social gathering with a hollow-square seating arrangement, and a reception table operated by a group of 4-H’ers (Cole Wickham, and Emma Wickham). Cole and Emma welcomed those attending and collected signatures for collages and scrapbooks and received many gifts, which were later presented to Debbie.
Upon arrival, a loud shout greeted Debbie, who then had time to greet and socialize with everyone directly. We served up a buffet-style light refreshment followed by the welcome greeting, opening remarks, and reflection from John Ferguson (4-H Extension Agent), who then opened the floor to all who shared their reflections and memories about working with Debbie. One fun memory shared by the former Extension Agent, Sue Munyan, was about a time when Debbie and she got lost while traveling to a 4-H program, on an almost never-ending trail. The story was told of the only landmark in search of was “the Governor’s House” which did not end well because, to their surprise, it was not the Governor’s House that they were expecting. Just imagine, before the disappointing moment, being lost and not wanting your passengers to know, and they start freaking out, then suddenly hearing one of the passengers bellowing out in fear “Please get us off this Devil’s Trail”! It abruptly became apparent that the hidden and suppressed fear all came alive with the repeated utterance “Please get us off this Devil’s Trail”.
Among the many spoken memories, there was much laughter, and many times Debbie could not hold back the tears, but the celebration was well received. The event culminated with a few youths requesting Debbie’s famous 4-H Chant “When I say 4, you say H”. She also took pictures with her first and second-generation 4-H’ers, and Extension staff from both Martin and St. Lucie County. (See photo inserts). Thanks again to Debbie for her 31 years of dedicated service to the St. Lucie County 4-H Youth Development Program. To all who were present and those who could not make it, we appreciate all that you are doing for St. Lucie County 4-H as we continue “To Make the Best Better”. Ken: Hi Stephanie.  I always enjoyed having you as a student, but I know I was not your only Master Naturalist instructor.  When and where did you take your FL Master Naturalist courses?  Which courses did you take?
Stephanie: I took my first Florida Master Naturalist Coastal Systems course in 2017 in Port St Lucie. So far, I have taken two core courses: Coastal Systems and Upland Systems. I have also taken three Land Steward courses: Environmental Interpretation, Conservation Science, and Habitat Evaluation. Additionally, I have registered for my first Restoration course in October, which is being held in Leon County but is offered 100% online. The Restoration course I am taking is on Invasive Plants.
Ken: I know you love Florida’s sea turtles and appreciate the need to conserve them. Why is sea turtle conservation important to you?  
Stephanie: To me, sea turtle conservation is deeply important because these magnificent creatures play an essential role in maintaining the health of our oceans, which is vital for our planet&#8217;s overall ecosystem balance. Their struggle for survival also mirrors the challenges we face with environmental issues like climate change and pollution, reminding us of the urgency and responsibility we have in preserving all forms of life.
Ken: You recently graduated from the Florida Master Naturalist Habitat Evaluation course conducted in summer 2023. We showed students about the processes used to evaluate sea turtle nesting habitat on Florida’s beaches. Is there a “take home” message you would like people to know? 
Stephanie: Upon completing the Habitat Evaluation course, I&#8217;ve learned that the intricate balance of our ecosystems heavily relies on each element within it, including sea turtle nesting habitats. The key takeaway I&#8217;d like to share is the crucial role that responsible coastal development and management play in preserving these habitats and, consequently, protecting sea turtle populations. Our collective actions matter, and we must strive to live harmoniously with nature, safeguarding it for future generations.

Ken: For our Habitat Evaluation course, you created a bioblitz for<a href="https://www.stlucieco.gov/departments-and-services/environmental-resources/county-preserves/spruce-bluff-preserve"> Spruce Bluff Preserve</a> in Port St Lucie. Why do you encourage others to visit this preserve and participate in the bioblitz? <a href="https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/spruce-bluff-preserve-bioblitz">https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/spruce-bluff-preserve-bioblitz</a>
Stephanie: I strongly encourage others to visit Spruce Bluff Preserve and participate in the bioblitz using the iNaturalist app. It&#8217;s a remarkable opportunity to connect with nature while contributing to the scientific understanding of our local biodiversity. Spruce Bluff Preserve is teeming with diverse species and historical significance. By using iNaturalist during the bioblitz, you get a unique, interactive way to identify and learn about different species. Plus, the observations you make help create a valuable database for scientists studying changes in species distribution and ecosystem health.
Ken: How has participation in the Florida Master Naturalist Program help you?
Stephanie: Participation in the Florida Master Naturalist Program has significantly enriched my understanding of Florida&#8217;s unique ecosystems, and the diverse species that inhabit them. This experience has allowed me to develop practical skills in habitat evaluation and species identification, which I can apply in numerous contexts. More importantly, the program has nurtured in me a deeper connection with nature and an amplified sense of responsibility towards conservation. It&#8217;s motivated me to engage more actively in environmental initiatives and to encourage others to appreciate and protect our natural world.
Ken: Can you describe one or two of the most memorable things you’ve done through the Florida Master Naturalist Program?
Stephanie: In 2018, during my Upland Systems course, I had the opportunity to visit two remarkable locations: Archbold Biological Station in Venus, and Adams Ranch in Fort Pierce. At Archbold, I delved into the intricacies of the Florida scrub ecosystem and had a meaningful encounter with a threatened Florida scrub-jay. At Adams Ranch, I witnessed first-hand the impact of dedicated land preservation efforts in a place teeming with diverse wildlife. Both of these experiences emphasized the importance of conservation and continue to inspire my commitment to ecosystem protection.
Ken: Where in Florida is your favorite place to go hiking that is also publicly accessible? Why is it your favorite place?
Stephanie: One of my favorite places to go hiking in Florida, which is also publicly accessible, is Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound. As the largest state park in Southeast Florida, it features a myriad of distinct natural communities ranging from coastal sand hills and upland lakes, to scrub forests and the pristine Loxahatchee River. Beyond hiking, I also enjoy kayaking and biking there, which allows me to appreciate the park&#8217;s diverse landscapes from different perspectives. Its rich biodiversity and variety of activities make every visit unique, making it my favorite destination for both adventure and tranquility.
Ken: After participating in the Florida Master Naturalist Program, can you estimate how many people you’ve been able to teach about conservation?
Stephanie: Utilizing both social media and in-person interactions, I&#8217;ve shared my knowledge about conservation with a wide audience. On social media, my posts on environmental issues reach a broad spectrum of individuals, potentially in the hundreds. During personal outings such as hikes with friends, I have the opportunity to highlight local biodiversity and discuss pressing environmental issues. Although hard to quantify, I believe these combined efforts have had a substantial impact in promoting conservation awareness.

Ken: Do you think you’ve made an impact as a Florida Master Naturalist?
Stephanie: Indeed, as a Florida Master Naturalist, I&#8217;ve been able to utilize the knowledge and skills I gained from the program to effect change in my own circles and beyond. I&#8217;ve facilitated a deeper understanding of our environment and the need for conservation amongst friends, followers on social media, and those I&#8217;ve interacted with in the field. These subtle shifts in perception and awareness can add up to significant change, reinforcing that every effort, no matter how small it may seem, can make a difference in the grand scheme of conservation.
Ken: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Stephanie: Being part of the Florida Master Naturalist Program has been a truly enriching experience. It&#8217;s given me tools and knowledge to make a difference in my local environment and has inspired me to keep learning and advocating for our natural world. Now that we are squarely into 2022, we can start to look forward to all that the new year will bring us. What we won&#8217;t look forward to are all the credit card bills the post office will bring us. To help alleviate that holiday debt, let&#8217;s look at some tips that can help us get control of our finances.
<h6>Know Where You Stand</h6>
Now is a good time to take a snapshot of your financial status. The first step in the journey to financial security is understanding where you are starting. You may have one or more credit card balances to tackle. Find a place to jot down those totals. Take a look at your bank accounts and see where they stand. Ideally, this is a great time to review your <a href="https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/HE827">monthly budget</a> as well. You may need to make adjustments for higher minimum payments and you will want to know how such an increase might impact your other expenses. Things to ask yourself: can I dine out this month or not without adding more financial stress to myself? Do I need to scale back on luxury grocery items (my fancy cheese!) until I get these cards paid off? How much holiday debt am I willing to incur next year?
Once you know where you stand financially, then you can make a plan.
<h6>Decide What You can Pay</h6>
Now you want to take a look at the credit card provider&#8217;s minimum required payment. Make sure you can afford to pay that amount. Ideally, you want to <a href="https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/FY1066">pay more than the minimum</a>. The faster you can pay off that balance, the less interest you will have to pay. There are several online calculator tools that can help you determine how much interest you&#8217;ll pay and how long it will take to pay off those balances making the minimum payment. This is important information to know so you can plan future expenses. Also, it is a huge motivator for paying more than the minimum!
If you find yourself in a situation where it seems impossible to make the required payments, talk to your creditor! Avoiding the creditor and doing nothing is the wrong choice. If they don&#8217;t know you are struggling, they can&#8217;t offer you any options. If they know, they will usually work with you to find a workable solution. Remember, they just want the money you said you would pay. It is in their best interest to help you find a way to pay it. This might involve freezing your card use while balances are reduce.
<h6>Look to Increase Income or Reduce Expenses</h6>
Whenever your budget is getting tight, explore how to change the numbers. If you can increase income in some way, that can alleviate stress. Taking a second job or adding contract work like as a hired driver for an internet service can be key to financial survival. Just be careful of &#8220;lifestyle creep.&#8221; This is a term that describes how those little extras in life tend to creep into our routines once we can afford them. Things like a drive-thru latte regularly instead of making coffee at home contribute to lifestyle creep.
Another option is to reduce expenses where possible. You might reduce subscriptions to video or music streaming services to lower expenses. Maybe you decide to forgo that weekly pizza night and cook for yourself instead to save money. Is it time to cancel that gym membership we never use? There are lots of obvious and creative ways to lower those monthly expenses so you have more for debt repayment.
<h6>Power Pay Option</h6>
If you are dealing with multiple credit balances to pay off and feel a bit overwhelmed by it, check out the <a href="https://extension.usu.edu/powerpay/#:~:text=PowerPay%20(Debt%20Reduction%20Tool),following%20your%20debt%20reduction%20plan.">Power Pay</a> option. Power Pay is a term coined by the University of Utah to describe their proven debt reduction method. This could be your best option for dealing with that holiday debt. It works because you focus on one balance at a time while just paying the minimum to other accounts. As each creditor is repaid, remaining creditors receive larger payments with freed up cash, which results in time and interest savings.
<h6>Use A Windfall</h6>
One other debt reduction method to mention is using &#8216;extra&#8217; money to pay debt. An unexpected refund, like a tax return or refund, can give us the boost we need to get those debt accounts under control. Realizing that many people plan to use those refunds for big purchases, I suggest <a href="https://www.irs.gov/refunds/frequently-asked-questions-about-splitting-federal-income-tax-refunds">planning to split your tax refund</a>. Once you know the expected amount of the return, allocate half or more to those debt balances. That helps make the rest of the year less stressful and you still get that &#8216;big item&#8217;. The IRS even has a form you can include with your return so they direct deposit the correct amounts into your different accounts (spending and savings). That way the money gets spent they way you intend.
Taking the time to clean up the old year can put you in a better space for conquering the new year. You might consider planning sooner for gift giving to avoid that holiday debt next year.
