An Introduction to Economic Analysis of Pest Management: A Case Study of Nematode Management

The economic performance of pest management practices is a critical factor when farmers make adoption decisions. Partial budget analysis is a widely used tool to evaluate the financial effects of different management practices in agricultural production. It provides an economic rationale for selecting the optimal treatment by evaluating the cost-effectiveness of the treatment. This publication explains how to employ partial budget analysis using a real-world example. It provides a step-by-step guide examining the costs and benefits of two different approaches, fumigation and nematicides, to manage nematodes on Florida's tomato farms.

Pests have long posed a serious challenge in agricultural ecosystems, inflicting substantial economic losses on a global scale. In agricultural production, pests are often associated with crop yield losses, leading to a reduction in farm profits. This initial publication in the An Introduction to Economic Analysis of Pest Management series aims to educate agricultural producers, Extension agents, and researchers in other disciplines about partial budgeting analysis. Partial budgeting analysis is a fundamental tool widely used to analyze the economic viability of adopting various pest-management strategies.

Safe drinking water is a fundamental requirement for human health and well-being. This publication is part of a series that aims to illuminate the critical issues surrounding drinking water quality and Florida’s drinking water system. We introduce the different categories of Florida’s drinking water system and discuss relevant federal and state-level regulations for each category. Information sources and channels are provided for readers to access drinking water information in their communities. The content is designed to benefit a diverse audience, including researchers, communications and outreach experts, environmental professionals, healthcare providers, and policymakers. It seeks to clarify the facts and explain the regulatory framework governing drinking water systems, identify areas that require targeted extension programs, and aid in the development of outreach materials to ensure the provision of safe drinking water.
