Understanding Metrics for Communicating the Economic Importance of Florida’s Fisheries
This series of publications aims to help readers understand the different economic metrics they are likely to encounter when working with fish, fisheries, and related coastal resources. There are three publications within the series.
- Part I provides an overview of the different uses and approaches of regional economic methods and natural resource economic methods, with an emphasis on when each should be used.
- Part II explains regional economic approaches in greater detail. These focus on spending in specific places, times, and sectors, like those connected to fisheries.
- Part III explains in greater detail natural resource economic approaches. These focus on human well-being related to resources like fisheries.

However, economic “importance” is not a very specific term, and can mean completely different things to different people. We reviewed different fields of natural resource economics to and describe the different economic terms most often used. This information can help management agencies and cooperative Extension agents use the correct terminology and teach the correct terminology in their outreach.
