Disease Control for Squash in Florida

Several diseases must be controlled successfully if squash is to be grown commercially in our subtropical environment. Even though many growers have been combating these diseases for many years, substantial losses sometimes still occur. A sequential disease control program is presented in this pointer as a guide for commercial growers. If followed, disease losses should be minimized for the majority of plantings.

This publication suggests a sequential disease control program for snap beans in Florida. Postharvest disease problems are addressed only to the extent that they are affected by field practices. Powdery mildew occurs on greenhouse-grown tomatoes and occasionally on tomatoes grown in vegetable gardens or in commercial fields in Florida. The fungus Oidium neolycopersici causes the disease. Losses in fruit production due to decreased plant vigor can reach up to 50% in commercial production regions where powdery mildew is severe. Although this level of damage has not been observed on tomatoes in fields in Florida, plants grown in greenhouses in North Florida reached 50%–60% disease incidence.

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), cantaloupe or muskmelon (Cucumis melo), squash (Cucurbita pepo), bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), and cucumber (Cucumis sativa) are commonly grown throughout Florida on both commercial farms and home gardens, while pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima) production is largely limited to north Florida.  Anthracnose on cucurbits, caused by the fungus Colletotrichum orbiculare, is a common disease that occurs worldwide and throughout Florida. While all cucurbits are susceptible to the disease, cucumber, cantaloupe, and watermelon are most frequently affected. This EDIS document provides information regarding the pathogen, disease cycle, diagnostics and symptoms, and an overview of management of this disease on cucucurbits.
