Organizations and municipalities use tree and plant giveaway programs to increase tree canopy on private property, provide environmental education, and boost community engagement. Tree and plant giveaway programs can provide a great opportunity to increase biodiversity and enhance various ecosystem services including reducing stormwater runoff, providing habitat for wildlife, reducing energy use, reducing urban heat, removing air pollutants, and providing recreational spaces, especially in urban areas.
